Home Ownership or 99 years rent?

I’ve seen this issue being raised before – that there is no such thing as ownership of HDB flats. Some people said that Singaporeans should not be called “HDB flats owners” but should be called “HDB leaseholders”. They said that afterall, everything is relevant for up to 99 years only!

So when people pay for the flats, are they paying huge sums to own it, or are they paying huge sums to “rent” it for up to 99 years?

Maybe the limited land we have in Singapore leave us with no choice but to have this type of “99 years” system? Is it?
