Many people are worried over plans to increase Singapore’s population figures to 6.9 million by 2030. Most people have concerns regarding the possibility of facing tougher competition for jobs by then, which may in turn, cause them to get lower pay.
Some people polled by The Straits Times call for the implementation of regulations where Singaporeans are considered first for jobs. I call this the “Singaporeans First Policy”. Parties such as the SDP has been pushing for it for years. Even Dr Tan Cheng Bock’s campaign in PE2011 contained that theme. I believe it is something worth talking about, and not discounted right away.
Critics of this policy would often tend to confuse people by branding it as a “Singaporeans Only Policy”, which is not true.
